Unbeaten Optimism

Our campaign began in mid-October at the fortress we all know as Wimbledon RFC. Inevitably, after months of pre-season graft, the lads came out on top with a 38-0 win and the opposition refusing to play the second half due to the might we possessed. Our winning Wednesdays continued into the wet months of autumn, beating Portsmouth 29-19 as well as kicking off the league cup with a 39-0 win over Brunel. Despite the collection of maximum points in every competitive match thus far, we remained optimistic and set our sights on what was to come. The month of November held two very important fixtures, St Mary’s in the next round of the league cup and a top-of-the-league clash vs Imperial. First up, St Mary’s. With eyes set on reaching the quarterfinals, from the start whistle the boys in gold in green did not hold back. 80 minutes later we were 10 tries up and Bouncing to Bosh. Next, Imperial. I’m sure something or someone was trying to hinder our ongoing success with an unprecedented number of injuries, illnesses and placement commitments going into this top-of-the-league clash. But in the face of adversity, we pulled together as a club and battled to a 27-13 win, a performance indeed Cecil himself would be most proud of. Caught up in the midst of unbeaten glory, morale is high and love for the badge is ever strong. With some very important fixtures upcoming, I am sure our success will continue into the new year.

So, what is to come?

  • The league cup quarterfinals vs Reading 2s on the 7th of February
  • The UH semi-finals vs RUMS on the 17th of February

With our unbeaten optimism set to carry us through to the new year, it has been a true honour to lead the MOTB so far.

Rebuilding and rising

This is a very important season for the mighty twos. With an active fresher intake of around 20, although having struggled for numbers in recent years, we were provided with an opportunity to re-build the second team and challenge for the title of Men’s South-eastern Tier 5B champions. Each week, the team sheet now consists of a great mix of both fresh and fragile (old) faces. Having 3 current or past mini-skips within the active squad, we were hoping to get the freshers up to speed regarding the George’s way quickly. Seemingly, it only took 3 weeks. Unfortunately for our mighty two’s, this required losing our first two games of the season in order to gain the experience regarding both playing with one another, and our shape, that we required to start bulldozing through teams.

Our first game of the season resulting in a 48-5 loss to LSE Men’s 2’s. A valiant effort was shown in the first forty, with only a two try difference at half-time. However, as a result of injuries and a lack of experience, LSE managed to run away with it in the second half. We are looking forward to our revenge later in the season.

Our next game was one that I will fondly remember, despite the unattractive score line, for the heart, and SGHMSRFC brand of passion that the boys in gold and green showed right up to the final whistle. Due to appalling London traffic, in true two’s fashion, we were given 5 minutes to warm up before the first whistle. It wasn’t until the second half that we began to feel warm and coherent as a team, from this point we held City Men’s 1’s out, with us ultimately scoring the final try. This however led to a 71-5 score line, despite this, we believe that the rules of last try wins, should have given this victory to us.

Finally, after two gruelling games, and hours of training behind the scenes, the mighty twos were rewarded for their efforts. 29-15 against West London Men’s 1’s. A game we played so well in, that the opposing team opened an investigation to try and determine whether we had used our ones’ boys instead. With some momentum gathered, we hope to continue our success well into the winter, earning our celebrations and congratulations by the time winter dinner rolls around.

Movember Campaign

SGHMSRFC Mo Page

As of writing this, on the last day of November, we as a club have a raised a massive £4,500. However all funds aren’t counted and donated until the 13th of December so we still actually have two weeks to continue raising money, so if you’re reading this right now, send your link into the family group-chats, share it to your story; do whatever ever you can to raise vital funds!

60 men take their life every hour, a shocking statistic we as a club want to change, and a few clubmen have gone above and beyond…

Matt Ball, take a bow, raising £1410 is a an achievement like none other and your generous contributions to the teams total does not go unnoticed.

Nick Iossifidis, a new member of the badge who has not only seamlessly fitted into the club, but has also understood our mission to break the stigma surrounding men’s mental health by raising an astounding £455.

Cian Gopal, a seasoned player who has taken a different approach this year, going above and beyond the expectations of growing a Mo, by completing daily physical and mental challenges to encourage more donations. Your £305 raised will fund vital research to develop more sensitive tests that allow prostate cancer to be diagnosed earlier and result in better health outcomes for men.

And thank you to all those who participated and raised money, we did this together.

As a club we have smashed it yet again, raising the most out of all other clubs and societies… COMBINED.

Thank you
George, your Co-Pres and Movember Ambassador x

UH Sports Night

‘Boobs or Balls?’

This years UH night began at a very secret place for a quick pit stop then journey juice. Once our holy pilgrimage began freshers were introduced to the tube game. We lost more fresh than the twos did games last year, safe to say the pint times need some work. Post tube game the final two engaged in what could quite possibly be the most intense hanging game to date. The poor Ladies and Gents of the end carriage didn’t deter these men of the badge in putting their cock on the line for the show.

Once at the curry things begin to get a little hazy so I’ll do my best to recount the events. Girls fighting over seats, particularly ones next to a certain ex-mini skip, freshers who’d now joined us being tied up because as we all know, there are no hands! And in a surprise turn of events, the seemingly boring netball girls were even more feral than what we could imagine, from trying to grab any meat within a 2 centimetre radius, to pulling out an XL girth, extra thick, curry flavoured condom, filled with the unknown and forcing our very own to split it and drink it; once again of course, with no hands.

If you’re looking for a review of the curry please visit ArvandEats on instagram and any of the 15 subsequent accounts you’ll find of his.

The further the curry goes on the further my account will stray from the truth. Men who were clearly ready for the hospital pulled it together and incredibly made it into infernos. Having been instructed to get there for 10 but with DJarv, (a fan favourite of his many handles) performing at 01:30, the camaraderie of the boys shone bright, and those remaining pulled out something magical. Doing just about anything to see our man perform and feeling elated, the boys had an immense night never to be remembered.
